Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between JIC, ORFS, and O-Ring Boss fittings?
JIC (37° flare) fittings seal on a metal-to-metal 37° flare surface. They are the most common fitting in North American hydraulic systems and are easy to assemble and disassemble repeatedly. However, they can weep under extreme vibration or pressure cycling over time. ORFS (O-Ring Face Seal) fittings use a flat face with an O-ring in a groove to create a positive seal. They provide a leak-free connection even under vibration and are preferred for high-pressure circuits and systems with strict zero-leak requirements. O-Ring Boss (ORB) fittings use a straight thread with an O-ring that compresses against a port face — they are used as port connections into pump, valve, and cylinder bodies rather than in the middle of a line.
What is the difference between metric bite type and JIC fittings?
These are two different compression-style fitting standards that are not interchangeable. JIC (37° flare) is the dominant North American standard and seals on a flared tube end. Metric bite type (DIN 2353 / ISO 8434-1) is the European standard and uses a ferrule that bites into the outside of the tube to create a seal — no flaring required. Metric bite type fittings are standard on most European-built hydraulic machinery. The tube OD and thread sizes differ from JIC, so if you are working on a European machine, you will need metric bite type fittings and metric tube rather than JIC fittings with imperial tube.
What SAE hydraulic hose standard do I need?
The most common SAE 100R hose standards are: SAE 100R1 — single wire braid, general hydraulic service up to 2750 PSI (3/4″). SAE 100R2 — double wire braid, higher pressure rating, the most widely used hydraulic hose. SAE 100R7/R8 — thermoplastic hose, lighter and more flexible than wire braid. SAE 100R12/R13 — spiral wire construction for very high pressure applications. Select the hose rated for your system's maximum working pressure at the operating temperature, with a minimum 4:1 safety factor. Contact our team with your pressure rating, bore size, and application and we can specify the correct hose.
What is the difference between a reusable and a crimp hose fitting?
A crimp fitting is permanently attached to the hose using a hydraulic crimping machine that compresses a metal ferrule onto the hose. This produces a high-integrity, factory-standard assembly suitable for full working pressure and is the industry standard for hydraulic hose. A reusable fitting consists of a nipple that is inserted into the hose and a socket that is threaded over the outside — no crimping machine needed. Reusable fittings are quicker for field repairs and low-pressure applications, but are not recommended for high-pressure hydraulic circuits where crimp assemblies are the correct choice.
How do I identify the thread standard on an existing fitting?
Thread identification requires measuring both the thread pitch and the thread OD or taper, then comparing to a thread chart. The most reliable method is to use a thread pitch gauge for pitch and a calliper for OD. Key distinguishing factors: NPT is tapered and will show a taper of approximately 1 in 16 when measured along the thread. BSPT is also tapered but uses a different thread form. BSPP and SAE straight threads are parallel (no taper). Metric threads will typically have pitch marked in millimetres. If you have an existing fitting or port and are unsure of the thread standard, our team can help with identification — contact us with the OD measurement and thread pitch.
Does MROStop support account-based purchasing for maintenance and engineering teams?
Yes. MROStop runs on OroCommerce, which supports company accounts with multiple users, purchasing approval workflows, saved shopping lists for recurring hose and fittings orders, cost-centre tracking, and order history export. Contact our team to configure an account structure that fits how your maintenance or engineering department manages procurement.
